Within our Early Years and Key Stage One provision we adopt an EYFS curriculum that spans a 3-year cycle. Our goal is that each child develops their communication and cognitive skills as well as their physical and emotional wellbeing whilst embedding a positive attitude and a love for learning that will continue to grow with them on their journey throughout Abbot’s Lea School and beyond.
As embedded in Cornerstone’s Projects we follow, we mark progress in the EYFS Framework’s seven areas of learning. The seven areas are:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
The teaching of all areas takes the form of practical and playful experiences both indoors and outdoors, for the children to access with increased independence and challenge from adults where appropriate. We provide a balance of adult-led sessions as well as independent learning opportunities that help children to think critically, play and explore and become active creative learners.
All students will follow the Phonics Bug Scheme of Work when learning to read in Phases 2 to 5.
Our Abbot’s Lea School employability programme means that students are encouraged to think about the world of work at the earliest stages of their school career.
