Music Beyond the Curriculum

Music over view at Abbot’s Lea School

At Abbot’s Lea School, we value the power of music in all of its forms and reflect this in our music curriculum and our music offer.

Inspired by the Model Music Curriculum, we provide our students with opportunities and experiences in

  • Singing
  • Listening
  • Composing
  • Performing/ instrumental performance

In our school we use ‘Charanga’ to form the foundation of our music lessons. We give our students the opportunity to become familiar and grow in confidence in using percussion instruments to play in each music lesson. In key stage 2 and 3 the students begin to learn a tuned instrument. We have chosen glockenspiels, which follow the Charanga lessons.

In Key Stage 4 and 5 the students can make an independent choice if they wish to continue with music following an ‘accredited learning’ pathway. Key Stage 4 and 5 learn to play the guitar.

For our students in Key Stage 3, 4, and 5 they have the opportunity to apply for 1:1 music tuition provided by professional musicians and vocal coaches.

Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to perform and to experience performances in and out of school. Students can perform for their peers in assembly and in concert and through our partnership with ‘Live Music Now’ they have joined live zoom concerts throughout the year.

In Summer 2023, all students who had been involved in music projects or tuition throughout the year performed in our “musical showcase.”

We have a school choir who perform for special occasions, led by Mrs Tobin.
