Preparing for adulthood, developing independence and discovering what comes next
The Bespoke Voyagers Curriculum is designed for students aged 14+ with autism and complex, interrelated learning needs. It provides an ambitious, personalised and age-respectful curriculum that supports students to develop the knowledge, communication, confidence and independence they need for life beyond school.
Learning combines academic subjects with practical experiences, community opportunities and preparation for adulthood. Students are supported to apply their skills in meaningful, real-life situations, develop greater independence and explore their individual interests, strengths and future aspirations.
Preparation for Adulthood is at the heart of the Voyagers curriculum, with communication, emotional regulation and independence embedded across all areas of learning.
Our Five Curriculum Areas
🧠 Cognition and Learning
Students continue to develop their English, Mathematics, reading, writing, problem-solving and digital skills. Learning is increasingly applied to real-life situations such as shopping, budgeting, reading timetables, following instructions and completing practical tasks.
💬 Communication and Interaction
Students develop communication for a wider range of purposes, including expressing opinions, making choices, asking for help, sharing experiences and communicating with different people. Communication may include speech, AAC, Makaton, symbols, written or digital communication.
❤️ Social, Emotional and Mental Health
Students develop self-awareness, emotional wellbeing, relationships, confidence and resilience. They learn about identity, friendships, personal boundaries, safety, rights and responsibilities, managing change and making choices about their future.
🏃 Sensory and/or Physical Development
Students develop physical confidence, coordination, sensory awareness, health and wellbeing through PE, Forest School, Food Technology, Sensology and practical activities. Learning also supports personal care, safe use of equipment and participation in leisure activities.
🌱 Preparing for Adulthood
Preparing for Adulthood runs throughout the Voyagers curriculum. Students develop independence, self-advocacy, travel and community skills, personal care, money management, vocational skills and knowledge of future opportunities. This may include further education, specialist college, volunteering, supported internships or supported employment.
Learning for life beyond school
Although the curriculum is organised into five areas, they are closely connected. Students are supported to use their communication, academic, social, physical and practical skills together in meaningful situations.
Our aim is for every Voyager to communicate confidently, participate actively, develop meaningful independence and prepare for their individual future beyond school.
