At Abbot’s Lea School, Pol-Ed lessons support students to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to navigate relationships, keep themselves safe, understand the world around them and develop their wellbeing. The programme is carefully structured across each key stage and is adapted to meet the needs and developmental levels of our students.
Pol-Ed lessons cover four key areas: Relationships, Keeping Safe, Understanding the Law and Wellbeing. Topics develop progressively as students move through school, from understanding emotions, friendship, safety and trusted adults in the early years, through to more complex themes such as online safety, consent, personal relationships, exploitation, the law, independence, mental health and personal safety in the secondary and post-16 phases.
The Pol-Ed curriculum overview below provides an outline of the topics covered across EYFS, Key Stages 1–4 and Post-16. It demonstrates how learning is revisited and developed over time, supporting students to build confidence, make informed choices and develop the skills they need to stay safe and participate as independently as possible in their communities. The overview also includes a Pol-Ed Passport at each key stage, focusing on key concepts including empathy, future planning, resilience, self-worth, fact-finding, informed decision-making, respect and risk.
