At Abbot’s Lea School, Votes for Schools forms part of our wider Personal Development Offer, providing students with regular opportunities to explore issues that affect their lives, their communities and the wider world.

Through age- and developmentally appropriate topics, students are encouraged to share their views, listen to different perspectives, discuss ideas and develop their confidence in expressing themselves. The programme provides meaningful opportunities for students to develop skills such as communication, critical thinking, decision-making and respectful discussion.

For our students, Votes for Schools is adapted to ensure that topics are accessible and meaningful, with appropriate visual, communication and sensory support where required. This enables students across the school to participate in discussions and activities in ways that reflect their individual communication styles and developmental needs.

A key purpose of Votes for Schools is to help students understand that their voice matters. Students are supported to consider different viewpoints, form and communicate their own opinions and recognise that people may have different experiences and perspectives.

This complements our wider Personal Development Offer by supporting students to become confident communicators, active members of their school and wider community, and increasingly independent individuals who understand that their views and contributions have value.
